The rules in detail
In Lotto 6/49 a player picks 6 numbers from 1 to 49. Each draw also produces a Bonus Number, taken from the same 49 numbers. The Classic Draw jackpot is won by matching all 6 main numbers, so the Bonus Number is not needed for it.
That jackpot is a fixed $5 million, and a $3 play has 1 chance in 13,983,816 of winning it. Every $3 play also carries a 10-digit Gold Ball Draw number. It belongs to a separate draw whose odds differ from draw to draw. The version with the Gold Ball went on sale on 11 September 2022, with a first draw on 14 September 2022, according to WCLC. The 6-of-49 format itself is older than that.
Draws take place on Wednesday and Saturday, and sales stop at 10:30 pm Eastern Time on draw day. The game is run by the Interprovincial Lottery Corporation.
